Short email, great week

Seriously the most amazing week! We had some really amazing
experiences, and I feel like I reflected back a lot on how much I have
changed since the beginning of my mission. I'm really glad to be out
here!

Sorry for the lame email,
I guess something funny this last week was that a random guy showed up
at church because he heard that all the hot girls are mormons.

Read the Book of Mormon!

Make it happen

My mission President's motto is "make it happen," and it is something
he takes really seriously haha. This week felt like a who lot of
making things happen haha, which was awesome!

Super busy week, and I can't wait to keep the streak going!

Monday was good, lots of ping pong with Elder Çakir. Followed by an
awesome appointment with a family. Sadly missed our train, so we had
to wait at the old train tracks for 45 minutes.

Tuesday we went to this awesome board game night with random people in
Braunschweig. It was super fun, and we just chatted up lots of people
and made friends.

Wednesday, Elder Römer was in town! Haha I was so excited to see him.
It was really cool to see how much we have both changed as
missionaries. I seriously miss him, and hope to serve with him again.
We pretty much just had district meeting, and found the rest of the
day.

Thursday was probably the greatest day of my mission, even though we
had NOTHING planned. We ended up eating at the University Cafeteria
with an inactive member. And then he came finding with us, and showed
us how it's done... it was amazing. He has got some talent, and I hope
we can go finding with him often.

Friday was killer, we ended up having some crazy lessons with an
awesome old Jehovas witness guy. I think we're gonna be able to poach
him haha, and I'm super excited about him. Then we had a little bit of
finding, and hung out with Brother Herud before we took off to another
lesson.

Saturday we played sports and then had the most amazing lesson with
Donald, but we found out that he can't read. He tried to hide it from
us, and always tries to read. But when I found out I just cried like a
baby... this guy got forced to leave his country because of all the
wars and terrorism, and ended up here. And it just breaks my heart
that he never had the chance to learn to read. He's super awesome and
I am so happy we can work with him.

Sunday was awesome as always! Sadly I'm totally out of my rubber
animals! So the kids have been so disappointed these last two weeks!
Aunt Julianne! Save me! Haha I love this ward, and I'm happy to be
here.

My thought from this week is just to remember a teacher that has
influenced your life, and write them a letter. I have honestly come to
realise how much teachers have influenced my life, and I just want to
say a thank you to anyone that helped to get me out here! I love you
all!

Elder Openshaw

Back to the East!

Well, this week was super awesome!

I guess the highlights start Wednesday when I got to spend a day in
good old East Germany! I was on an exchange with Elder Purdy, and we
had some very East German experiences. We even spent an hour just
talking about "DDR Zeit," in an old train station that got converted
into a house! It was super cool to be back in the East, and just see
how different it is. We met with some cool old ladies who fed us way
too much food, met with a member named Jörn who also fed us too much
food, and just had a grand ole time.

Then on Thursday we ended up having interviews with President Fingerle
in Hannover. That went really well, and we got a picture with Sister
Fingerle. Sadly on the way back to the train with my District I ended
up walking full speed into a pole on the sidewalk. Hahaha it was
actually pretty funny, and I got a nice goose egg on my forehead for a
while.

Friday was madness, with all sorts of appointments! It seems like
those are our money days. We had a member that came with us to two
appointments, and in both of them we taught really well and the people
seemed really interested. One, a really old guy that we met at the
hospital, is named Herr Bosch. He was super interested and I have a
feeling that he will make some good progress. The other is a really
cool student from Cameroon named Mardiel. They both were really
excited for the Book of Mormon, and I look forward to meeting with
them next Friday.

Saturday we accidentally ended up stranded in a tiny little town in
the middle of nowhere. We made an appointment with this guy who has
randomly been showing up to church, and then he wasn't home... we
looked and saw that the next bus came in 3 hours. Bus we called him
and he told us that he was in the main part of town, so we called up
some members who came and got us. And then they took us to their house
and we had a lesson there! They helped us out so well, and our lesson
ended up going fantastically! Donald, the random guy, should be making
progress and hopefully we will set a baptismal date for him soon.

Sunday was also good, had a very chaotic lesson in the second hour.
Way too many languages at once... we had Turkish, French, German,
English, and a little bit of Farsi (?).

This week I listened to my favourite talk by President Faust a couple
times, and it always is a motivator for me. It is called "The
Weightier Matters," and my favourite quote is "when I pray, I don't
pray for justice, I pray for mercy." And I think that is something we
all can work on giving one another. We should all be merciful to each
other, and work especially on being merciful in our minds. It's
comforting to me that our Savior is merciful, that he truly loves us.
I would encourage you all to listen to/ watch that talk from President
Faust, because it really changes my perspective every time I hear it.
I love you all!

Elder Openshaw

Best week yet!

This week was incredible! We had some amazing lessons, made some new
friends, and all in all just had a good week!
Tuesday we tried to go to the University and set up an appointment to
introduce ourselves to religion classes there... but the professor we
talked to didn't seem so excited about the prospect, and kicked us out
promptly. I think we will actually try again, and hopefully we catch
him on a better day haha.
Wednesday we picked up the Turkish speaking elders that are living
with us now. And then at mutual we hung out with the young men for a
bit.
Thursday we went finding and then taught English class, pretty boring day.
Friday, Bruder Herud set up a lesson for us with someone in the
hospital. So he picked us up and then was there for the lesson. It was
a great lesson, and the guy is super excited to read the Book of
Mormon. Then we went and I got my German Driver's license, then we had
an eating appointment with the new elders. The family made so much
food, but I was feeling good and just kept eating. I think I ate twice
as much as the other elders, and the new elders were impressed that I
could pack down so much food. Then we had another appointment with
José and Angela, but this time came prepared to Skype the Spanish
speaking elders.
Saturday we played sports at the church and then a young man from the
ward came with us for the whole day. We went finding and then later we
had the most awesome lesson ever! It was with Uli, one of our
investigators, and when he prayed with us we all ended up staying on
our knees for like 10 minutes in total silence. It honestly felt like
how it's supposed to feel out here. It felt like we were helping
someone change their life.
Sunday was awesome as always.
And today has been crazy busy, so I might not be able to get a much
needed haircut haha. Hopefully we can fit it in though!

I love Germany, and I love the gospel! Read the scriptures and pray, I
love you all!
Love,
Elder Openshaw

Oh wait! I forgot that I randomly bought quail eggs this week. A young
man in the ward sells them.
